Maralyn Reed-Wood

porcelain

Maralyn’s affair with ceramics began at school where she was lucky enough to work with the Lochhead Pottery in Kirkcudbright for her Highers. Later on, she was to continue her studies in an air raid shelter where her ceramics teacher used to bring Segovia into the classroom to teach guitar. After becoming an art teacher she eventually worked as an art therapist for an epilepsy hospital where she first discovered the healing properties of work with clay. During this time she established her own studio and began to work in porcelain, mainly because of its unparalleled strength ,whiteness, purity and translucence.

In 1990 she had her work selected for the Triennialle de la Porcelaine , in Switzerland where all her nine works were bought by a collector on the opening night. After having her work exhibited alongside members of the International Academy of Ceramics she showed at the Scottish Gallery alongside Peter Lane. Illness at this point forced her to work on very small scale and she founded ‘Shards’, a small company designing and making porcelain jewellery. This craft business became very successful, selling throughout Scotland, the UK, and exporting as far away as Russia and the USA. In recent times Maralyn has re-established her porcelain studio where she produces figurative works. She supplies seventeen galleries and has exhibited with the Royal Scottish Academy, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, as well as being shortlisted for the Zelli Porcelain prize on four occasions. Maralyn’s inspirations come from many sources, decay and complexity of nature probably being the main starting points.
